I started asking myself this question a couple months ago. Well, more like about 6 months ago when thoughts started to ruminate inside my screwy little mind about either killing myself or fixing myself. Actually, those are thoughts I've had for several years off and on. I just never could decide which way to with it. I was in almost constant pain on a physical and mental level. I had to do something. So I finally am.
It took me all this time to finally figure out how to listen to my body. If you pay attention you will realize it's saying quite a lot. Sending a very loud message. Mine was. It was telling me quite loudly I needed to do something. It was sending me billboard sized messages telling me I had to either fix things or die. One or the other. Amazing how long I ignored them.
We get so caught up in worrying about things that don't really matter, we tend to overlook those that do. We are so busy trying to survive we forget how to live. We are so focused on what is happening around us, we don't notice what is happening to or in us. We stopped paying attention to ourselves.
Do you sleep when you can or do you sleep when you need to?
How about eating? Do you eat when you're hungry and your body says it needs fuel? Or do you eat when your schedule allows it?
Do you push through the pain, thinking it will go away and not understanding why it won't? That's your body yelling at you.
My body has gone from yelling to all out screaming. Now I'm listening. I'm getting the message. Who ever coined the phrase "no pain no gain" was full of crap. If what you're doing causes you pain, you're doing something wrong. If you can't move after doing something, there is most likely a valid reason for that. If your knees swell to the size of basketballs, they're doing it for a reason.
So, while I am doing everything I can to improve my life, my health and my happiness, I am also learning to listen to my body. You should too, you'll feel better.
